Colourful Indian Kurti

The Kurta is a variation of the traditional salwar kameez and it is worn by both men and women in South and Central Asia. A shorter version of the Kurta is known as the Kurti which is a female attire and most popular among women in Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Srilanka. It became famous back in 1960s and 1970s during the beginning of the hippie culture and it still stands as a fashion statement. Kurtis are normally loose fitted shirt-like kameez and its length is little above the knee or sometimes just upto the waistline. It does not have a collar but comes in different kinds of neck patterns, cuts and sleeve styles. Kurtis are the result of Western influence on South Asian fashion.

These are normally worn as a casual or a formal wear. It comes in various fabrics just like the salwar kameez and the most common ones are cotton, synthetic, polyster, silk, linen etc., but cotton and synthetic are most preferred fabric since it is easy to maintain and feels comfortable during hot climates. In colder areas like Kashmir, woolen kurtis are worn. Many Kurtas that are created to be worn during summer comes with simple decorative works such as chikan work, print work, embroidery work and much more.

It can be worn along with leggings, tights or chudidar pants but women these days love to pair it up with jeans for a trendy look. Besides the trendy effect, jeans are more durable for rough use and blue jean goes well with most colours of the kurtis. Kurtis are lovely outfit that can be in so many other ways. Frock style kurtis are now the latest trend and there are two common types of it. One is the Anarkali style and the other comes with a belt at the waist.

Although women mostly buy readymade kurtis from the stores, some prefer to have it custom stitched to fit their body size perfectly or they just alter the readymade ones according to their requirement.
